Exploring Creativity

Trinity Academy strives to point students towards the wonder and beauty of God, who is the ultimate creator and designer. Through the study of art, students discover and appreciate the beauty of the world around them. This is achieved by studying Art History, experimenting with different mediums, refining skills and techniques, and sharing beauty with others. Our curriculum, starting with Transitional Kindergarten and progressing through 12th grade, is designed to bring the student through the process of understanding and practicing the basic building blocks of art to produce final works that effectively communicate their own unique ideas.

Lower School Visual Arts

Lower School students attend art class once a week for formal instruction. By studying great works and artists of the past, students explore what is visually “true, good, and beautiful.” Using art history as the backdrop, students connect the grammar of history and their classroom curriculum in the art room. We have several opportunities to display artwork, such as Grandparents Day, the NC State Fair, at local businesses, and in our Lower School hallways. Students are introduced to various art mediums including painting, printmaking, paper mâché, and clay. Sharing the same building as upper school art, younger students are able to see what’s next for them and get a front row seat to older students creating art for all school events.

Middle School Visual Arts

All students in Middle School take a foundational art class that builds upon skills learned during Elementary grades, with a more in-depth focus on drawing and painting techniques. Throughout the Middle School curriculum, students begin learning to evaluate and create works of art using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, Color Theory, and compositional strategies.  Through challenging projects and working with a variety of media, students obtain the building blocks needed to emulate the true, good, and beautiful through the works of art they create.

High School Visual Arts

In high school, students further refine skills learned in Middle School and are introduced to more advanced concepts in drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, and design.  In 9th grade, students take Art Foundations, which focuses on a deeper understanding of the elements of art and principles of design.  They engage in projects that introduce them to the various, more specialized courses offered in 10th-12th grades – at which time students may choose from a selection of courses based on their individual interests: 3-D Design, Ceramics, Drawing & Painting, Graphic Design, and Digital Photography. Upper-level students who wish to challenge themselves can qualify to take the following AP Art classes: AP 2D Art & Design, AP 3D Art & Design, and AP Drawing & Painting.

In addition, our faculty works with students who are applying to art schools, assisting them with compiling a portfolio of works that represent their gifts and talents.  Many of our graduates have moved on to study art at local universities, including UNC and NC State Design School in the programs of Art & Design, Architecture, Industrial Design and Design Studies.
