Mrs. Applegate has been helping students discover a love of mathematics for over 12 years. After earning a B.S. in Management Information Systems and a Master of Education degree in Math Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech she began her teaching career in 2004 in Fairfax County, Virginia. After moving to Raleigh, Kim taught at Green Hope High School before taking time off to start a family. During her time away from the classroom, Kim was a private math tutor with a full evening schedule. It was during this time that Kim refined her teaching philosophy and approach. She enjoyed being able to work with students one-on-one, assessing how each one learns differently, and helping them develop a true appreciation for learning the “whys” not just the “hows” of mathematics. Seeing the resulting joy, enthusiasm, and confidence that followed is a true reward for any teacher with a passion for their subject.
The Applegates fell in love with Trinity when researching kindergartens for their first child. It was “love at first visit” and Kim knew that when she went back to teaching in the classroom full time, she wanted to be at Trinity. She feels truly blessed to be a part of the Trinity community, both as a parent (Maddy, class of 2026 and Spencer, class of 2029) and teacher.
Kim enjoys spending time with family, running and exercise, Virginia Tech football, watching her kids (and husband) play soccer, playing on the church softball team, and spending time at the lake during the summers. The Applegates attend Open Door Church where she and her husband, Chris, are Care Group leaders.
