Allow me a moment to boast about our students. I spent all day yesterday running the Poetry and Prose Level Two competition, and I couldn’t be more proud of your children. In fact, as I sat there among the judges, there were several times I thought, “Oh, how I wish the parents could witness this!”
The judges and I giggled at Edward Lear poems, smiled at excerpts from classical literature, and were at times literally moved to tears by speeches. From our youngest students in TK to our oldest competitors in sixth grade, each division held up pieces of truth, goodness, and beauty. For me, the entire day was one of those “this is why I’m here” moments, and had you been able to witness it, I’m quite sure you would agree.
Thursday afternoon, however, was bittersweet as I announced the names of those who would be moving on to the next level of the competition. I knew I was the messenger of joy for a few and disappointment for others. The judging this year was incredibly difficult, and even those who did not move on have much to celebrate. I know it may not feel that way right now, but as I wrote you in February, moments like these are opportunities for tremendous growth. Yes, they are painful, but in the end, all of our Lower School students won by giving their best effort. These truly are kids who will Transform Tomorrow!
